Why I'm voting 'yes' to name change
I’ve been a SLA member for 10 years now and it’s provided me with a superb network, learning opportunities, many new friends, a few challenges and some fun. In those 10 years I’ve had six different jobs in four different sectors all have enabled me to use the skills I learned at library school but none of the job titles has included "Librarian."
I like change and think it’s time for SLA to change, and to change using an evidence base of solid research. I am in favour of the new name ‘Association for Strategic Knowledge Professionals’. We have plenty of reliable research to show us how this name will resonate with our employers, acknowledge the benefits and value of our work and speak to a wider potential membership.
As a member of the SLA Board since 2006 I’ve been involved in all the stages of the alignment project. Although initially skeptical about how the research would unfold I was pleasantly surprised by some of the findings. In particular that knowledge is the bridge between information and action. I believe this perfectly describes one of our core characteristics as a profession and I’m pleased to see it in the new name.
Voting on the new name opens next week so don’t miss the opportunity to cast your vote and help the association move into its second century with a more fitting name.
